ALSO FENCES was a three post blogspot food blog in 2013 which you may no longer read. Since 2022 it has been the name of a directory containing altered recipes and cooking notes used for reference. Since 2024 the notes have been lightly cleaned up and made available to you on this website.
THE PAGES ON THIS WEBSITE vary wildly in quality and precision depending on the target audience. Often times pages start out as an overview of and slight changes to a recipe that I may or may not have made before. In this case, the target audience might be:
- future me when I'm in a grocery store and I'd like an accessible list of ingredients that doesn't involve Google or paywalls.
- future me that's in a kitchen and wants a quick reference on how to make something that doesn't require Google or paywalls.
- a friend that I've rewritten a recipe for, because I thought it was great or met a dietary restriction. Usually it's tailored to their skill level; if they're 'into cooking' notes are minimal, if they're not notes might be overly prescriptive.
Other times a page is just a series of notes on a broad cooking topic that I wanted to remember at the time, made public because there's no reason not to.

A COLOPHON, if you're interested: Notes are produced in markdown files on either an 8-year old laptop while my kid is napping or an 8-year old iPhone while something is simmering on the stove. A cron job runs every half hour on this server (the cheapest DigitalOcean droplet you can buy running nginx) that sync the markdown files, runs a python script to convert them to cleaned up HTML, and publish them.
